The Power of Ctrl+Y

Anyone who’s been around computers for a while knows that Ctrl+Z is the Undo key. (Well, if you don’t know, then get a copy of PCs For Dummies and learn now!) Ctrl+Z can help save your butt in a number of situations. But Ctrl+Z, the Undo command, has a twin. It’s Ctrl+Y, the Redo command.

My Thoughts on Online Backup

I’m a big fan of backing up computer files. I’ve got backup programs running automatically on all my computers, with robust external hard drives storing safety copies of my stuff. I use all the backup tricks in the world, save one: online backup. My reason is that I don’t trust it.

…is no way to go through life, son.” That memorable line was spoken by the baleful Dean Wormer in Animal House (1978). In the early 21st Century, however, the statement can be replaced with the following:

Googling your way through life will get you nowhere.

Granted, it’s not as powerful, but it’s a highly relevant point.

That Interface Sucks!

As a technology writer, I find that there are some things I enjoy writing about and some things I just find painful and do everything to avoid. It’s not my fault that something is painful to write about. Instead, it’s probably due to poor design more than anything happening in my head. Take the Windows Task Scheduler, for example.

Flash (in the Pan) Drives

An AP article this past weekend revealed that the US Department of Defense has banned all USB flash and thumb drives from the Pentagon. And this was just as USB drives are getting deplorably kitchy.
