Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

With the recent news that the online boinking website Adult Friend Finder has been hacked, my thoughts turn to the digital realm and what is now apparently the effortless and magical way that people can find their new partners.

Update an Android Contact with a Phone Number Extension

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

This situation happens to me twice. The first time is when I create a contact: Where do I put the extension number? The Contacts app lists no place for an extension. And second, even if you could set an extension into a contact’s information, how do you dial it? The answer is that you can, but the solution isn’t obvious.

You thought it would be cute. Your significant other was signing in the shower, so you held the phone up over the curtain and snapped a picture.

The results were hilarious! And you looked at the photo. Your significant other looked at it. And then you both noticed, well, nudity — private stuff. Time to delete the picture.

“Is it really gone?”

Of course not!

What’s Wrong with Apple

It would be incorrect to say that Apple is the same company today that it was under the helm of Steve Jobs. Sales are slowing. Innovation is barely alive. New products are non-existent. What’s happening is obvious to me, and it was obvious to Jobs himself, when he spoke about Xerox PARC many years ago.

Back in college, I enjoyed looking at all the terminals around campus and marveling at the keyboards. Along with the keys I knew from my typewriter, I saw mystery keys such as Alt, Meta, Del, Rubout, and Esc. What were these keys? What did they do?

I’m floored. Not known as a hardware company beyond mice and keyboards, Microsoft has quickly shown that it can be more innovative than Apple.

In all my computer career, I never thought I’d ever write that.

Messing with Your Work Window

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

The interface for Microsoft Word has changed over the years. Back when Word was a text mode program (believe it or not), it had a clunky, half-screen interface that really got in the way. Then when Word became a Windows program, it featured its documents as subwindows in a single window. Today, Word documents are each held in their own window, but how do those windows sit on the desktop?

The Problem with Computer Programming Books

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Recently, I took it upon myself to learn another computer programming language. I enjoy C and have coded in it longer than any other language. I support my books on c-for-dummies.com. But newer languages offer better tools and so I set out to learn a few.

The Galaxy Note 7

I’ve been refraining from writing about the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. I’m certain it’s something you know about as the stories are all over the media. As the author of a few books on the Galaxy Note line of phones, I thought I’d weigh in on the subject, especially since the topic has turned into a milestone in cell phone history.
