Blast From the Keyboard Past

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

The original IBM PC keyboard was a poor cousin to today’s monster, aircraft carrier-sized keyboards. The pitiful thing had only 83 keys. That seems like way too many, but keep in mind that the typical HDTV remote has about 90 buttons. It puts things in perspective.

Apple Below 500

Filed under: News — admin @ 11:47 am

It finally happened! Apple sank below 500/share, as I predicted a while back on this blog. I’m not thrilled with it, being a long-term stockholder.

Short term, I think the stock will linger, but there’s too much value for it to go too low too long. Apple is a jittery stock, but the company proves itself again and again. My guess is that after some good quarters and some innovative product introductions, the stock will come roaring back.

Key word: innovative. We’ll see.

An Android Clipboard Solution

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Copy-paste. Cut-paste. It’s all basic computer stuff, nothing I need to explain. That is, unless you want to know where the copied or cut item went. Yeah, you probably know it’s “the clipboard,” but what is that? Where is it? On your Android mobile device, I don’t have a good answer, but I do have clipboard suggestions.

Holiday PC Sales Lag

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:24 am

For the first time in five years, PC sales were down over the holiday season. I blame the lackluster appeal of Windows 8. Apparently so does this article:

The Perils of “Gorilla Arm”

Filed under: News — admin @ 10:16 am

My friend David Pogue puts it succinctly: Windows 8 on a desktop isn’t going to take off.

The other problem was the tingling ache that came from extending my right arm to manipulate that screen for hours, an affliction that has earned the nickname of gorilla arm. Some experts say gorilla arm is what killed touch computing during its first wave in the early 1980s.

Trackpads Are Here

Filed under: News — Tags: — admin @ 10:24 am

If you want to use Windows 8 but don’t want to pay a zillion dollars for a multi-touch monitor, there is finally a solution. Trackpads have arrived!

Similar to the Apple Magicpad (or whatever they call it), you can get a multi-touch trackpad for your PC. It sits alongside the computer keyboard, just like a second mouse. Rather than lose all sensation in your arm by swiping a touchscreen monitor, you can swipe the trackpad. It’s handy!
