Clear the Cache

Recently, my Pixel tablet had an issue with the Maps app constantly downloading. When I checked the notification, the card said, “Canceling.” It was stuck.

As a solution, I cleared the app’s cache. The cache is a collection of information otherwise found on the Internet. So if that app were stuck downloading, clearing the cache might fix the issue.

It didn’t.

The next step, more drastic, is to clear the app’s data. The data includes information not backed up to the cloud — local stuff. For the Map’s app, the data includes offline maps, as an example. This information is nothing that can’t be replaced, so I cleared the app’s data.

Problem solved.

Clearing the data when an app is having issues isn’t a bad thing. After all, if the data is corrupted, then it’s useless to you anyway: Delete it.

Here is a link to a video explaining how to clear the cache or clear the data of an app that’s run amok.

I’ve used this technique to fix games that were broken or where I’d made an incorrect setting but was otherwise unable to change it. By deleting the data, I effectively reset the app without reinstalling it. So I lost all my progress for the game, but that was a minor price to pay to regain control.
