UFS Storage for Your Android Phone

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Recently, Samsung announced a new, faster media card, one that you’ll probably see available on its mobile devices in the near future. The Universal Flash Storage, or UFS, standard provides for data access up to five times faster than the standard microSD card. That’s pretty dern fast.

The cards will probably start appearing in Samsung phones and tablets soon, or at least the card slots will appear. And, yes, I bet that the cards will be expensive; you don’t get newer, faster, technology for cheap — not right away.

Below I’ve mocked up the outline of the UFS card in comparison to the typical microSD card. The sizes aren’t exact, but they look similar.

Right now, the microSD is the king of the teensy media cards. If your Android phone has a removeable media card, then it’s a microSD card. And their popularity is coming back, which is weird. After being popular initially, Google suddenly decided that the cards weren’t necessary, but apparently not any more. And, obviously, Samsung sees the value in removable media on a mobile device.

I tried looking up UFS cards on Amazon to get an idea of who much they cost. The problem is that “UFS cards” are apparently a game called Universal Fighting System. They’re collectable cards. I wonder if Samsung knows that? Anyway, I couldn’t find any of the UFS media cards available. My guess is that the price may be similar to microSD cards, with a small premium added. Or a large premium.
