Adios, Picasaweb

ma-Picasa-Web

The ever-changing Google landscape continues to ever-change. The latest casualty is Picasaweb or Picasa or Picasa Photos or whatever they called it once. And I’m kind of happy that it’s gone.

The big issue I had with Picasaweb was the name. Was it “Picasa” or “Picasaweb” and what was the difference between the two?

When Google Photos came along, the distinction was blurred further: What’s the difference between the Picasa-something and Google Photos?

Turns out that Google was apparently just joking around with the Picasa thing. Ha-ha! Glad that I wrote all about it in my books because now, officially, Google wants you to use Photos instead. It’s a welcome respite.

The web page address for Google Photos is like most Google cloud services: photos.google.com, just like the calendar app on the web is calendar.google.com. That address makes sense.

Of course, Picasaweb’s address was picasaweb.google.com, but the name was the weird part: On that page, the title was just “Picasa.”

Good news: All your Picasa stuff will be migrated to Google Photos if it hasn’t already. The only difference you’ll experience on your Android gizmo is that photo backup now takes place exclusively on Google Photos. Once on the web, you can share links to your images and albums from Google Photos, which works similarly to Picasaweb.

Remember: All photos from your phone or tablet backed up are placed into a private area, not accessible to anyone without your permission (or your password). My Android For Dummies books refer to methods on how to disable automatic backup in case you’re a Hollywood starlet or other celebrity who enjoys taking career-ending photos of yourself and having them oogled by the crowd at 4chan.

You can read more details about this change on the Picasa blog, which is on the Blogger website, filed under the name Google Photos. Go figure.
