It’s Windows 10 Day

Here it is! Supposedly, sometime today, all those computers that are scheduled to get the free Windows 10 update will enjoy the potential of the update. I can’t wait!

Well, yeah, I can wait. In fact, I will be waiting most of the day.

Even though I have a positive vibe on the whole Windows 10 thing, the only reason I’m updating three systems today is due to contractual obligations.

My primary laptop has hosted the Windows 10 preview for about four weeks now. That’s a requirement for an update to my Laptops For Dummies title.

My test PC was updated to Windows 10, but it died a horrible death during the beta process. (Read about it here.) It’s one of the systems I will be reluctantly updating today.

Finally, I have the Surface Pro 3 tablet, which I couldn’t update but hopefully it actually gets updated today. That’s the system I’ll most likely update first, just because I’m dubious about the update. Try as I could, the preview just wouldn’t load. So sometime before the end of the day, I’ll know.

My other systems have the Get Windows 10 notification lingering on the taskbar. I’ve not “reserved” my copy on those systems, due to general fear and dread that accompanies most operating system updates.

I also read an interesting article (and sorry that I don’t have the link) where a wag predicted that the Windows 10 update would be just horribly awful. His notion was that Microsoft doesn’t really care about Windows as much as it wants to sell you advertising.

You see, in Windows 10, you pretty much have to surrender the fact that you need an online identity to use the operating system. That’s especially true (in the beta, at least) when you add other accounts to the system. There’s no reason to require online login for an operating system, unless the purpose is remote control over your PC somehow. Seeing how people are generally suspicious of big government and big business, such a thing is a valid concern. Time will tell.

Until then, and because I’m writing this post well before the beta is released, I’ll give you my thoughts and impressions on Friday.

  1. Update Apparently Microsoft will be rolling out the Windows 10 upgrade, which makes sense. Obviously if everyone who signed up gets the upgrade at midnight, the MIcrosoft servers would die a slow and painful death. So your PC may not see the update until later this week.
