Windows 10 Free

In a shockingly logical move, Microsoft has announced that the Windows 10 upgrade will be free, available at no cost to current users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The message here is clear: Windows XP users, you suck.

Apple has been offering OS X upgrades free to current users for years now. It’s nice to see Microsoft make the switch, which should motivate more users to upgrade than had they charged for Windows 10.

I still haven’t installed the technical beta, although it’s available. I’m finishing up a few projects and I don’t want to distract myself. Also, I’m at a loss as to which PC to sacrifice to Windows 10. I’ll probably make that decision soon.

  1. Windows 10 upgrade FREE* to all Windows 7 and Windows 8 users!

*only during the first year after Win10’s launch; no, Microsoft didn’t announce pricing at yesterday’s event.

Also, according to this CNET article (http://www.cnet.com/news/microsofts-windows-rt-isnt-dead-yet/), it sounds as if the five people who bought a Surface RT/RT 2 (and possibly the other Windows RT tablets) won’t actually be getting Windows 10. They’ll instead get a future upgrade that brings some of the Win10 features to Windows RT, very much like how Microsoft handled the Windows Phone 7.5 deal.

  2. Ah! I was wondering why it didn’t make any sense. Thanks for clearing that up!
