The Instagram Rapture

In a deft move that had delightfully unintended consequences, Instagram decided to purge all the spam, all the fake accounts, all the bots, and all the nonsense from its site. The result is that some so-called “celebrities” have ended up not being as celebrated as they originally thought. Take Justin Bieber — please!

The punk of pop apparently lost something like 3,500,000 followers. Yep, they were all fake.

Not being a frequent Instagram user, I’m unclear on the whole “follower” thing, but it seems to me that Bieber doesn’t have as many screaming, hormone-infused tweens as he originally thought — not that he would give a rip. Or it could be that he’s somewhere coddling his bruised and over-inflated ego with a few bottles of Cristal and some sympathetic fans. I don’t really care.

Kudos to Instragram. Add one more nail to the coffin of the celebrity cult that has overtaken mankind. The sooner it’s dead, the better.
