Adios Microsoft Office Clipart

I don’t know whether to be elated or sad. After several painful generations, Microsoft Office no longer has a Clipart Library.

Okay: I’m elated!

I detested the Office clipart when it first came out. The artwork was amateurish and crude. Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy clipart. I use it! Back in the 1990s, I received a gift of the book 50,000 cliparts (or something). I still have the CDs! The artwork was pretty useful and I adorned my book The Computer Dictionary For Dummies with lots of the (public domain) clipart. The Office clipart was cheezy by comparison.

When I’d updated my Word For Dummies title, I’d have to trudge through the Clipart Library to ensure that it worked. I would seriously be surprised if anyone actually used the artwork, so I’d make that section in the book super short.

Apparently when you summon Clipart now, you’re taken to Bing Image Search, which is probably what most people do for clipart anyway — albeit with Google Image Search probably more often than Bing.

So adios Microsoft Office clipart! Your absence shall not be noticed.
