Microsoft Surface Under Water

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:19 am

Microsoft tries, they really do. Bill Gates is infamous for sloughing off the Internet in the early 1990s. Microsoft was late to the market on phones, tablets, and their Surface device is well, sinking.

Supposedly, Microsoft paid the NFL millions to promote their Surface tablets. Despite their efforts, game announcers refer to the devices as “iPads.”

According to Computerworld, Microsoft is $1.7 billion in the red on Surface. They sell one Surface tablet to every 27 iPads that Apple sells. Given the universal farting sound (and smell) that Windows 8 has generated, the question needs to be asked: Can Microsoft pull itself out of this hole?

  1. The answer is: No.

At least kill that useless Surface RT (and since Nokia is now MS, the Lumia 2520) already; all the other OEMs have killed their RT tablets. As for Surface Pro, it’s not really selling because consumers just aren’t the focus of that device, or that’s how I see it. Now, if an Atom-powered Surface Mini were to be made or even if it replaced Surface RT entirely and it were priced no higher than what a base iPad (or iPad Mini) cost, then I could see it taking off – but then realistically, you throw Winderps 8 in there and it’s still dead in the water.

At least we’re getting our Start Menu back at the end of this month. If you can stand to run a pre-release OS, that is.

  2. Oh, but I have to stand the pre-release. My publisher gears my books to Windows releases, so I’m contractually bound to get the beta and start writing a book about it. Oh joy. I shall endeavor to remain neutral.

I’m curious as to how the Chrome Books are doing when compared with Surface.
