The Internet TV Life, Part I ½

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

My work on the cabinets didn’t proceed as quickly as I had thought. So while I have a new Internet-ready TV, I’ve only had a few hours to experiment with it.

The idea struck me to get an Internet-ready TV a few weeks back. I’ve been writing about such things for a while, so I figured it was a logical step. Besides, between subscribing to Netflix on-demand and other Internet services, does it really make sense to subscribe to cable TV any more?

To prepare for the TV, I’ve spent the last month remodeling my bedroom. It all began when I discovered that there was a gorgeous wood floor beneath the carpet.

I live in an older home, built in 1949. Often such homes were built with hardwood floors, but then in the 1960s or 1970s, the owners felt that wall-to-wall carpeting was a better deal.

Wrong.

So I pulled up the carpet, sanded and finished the floor. Then I painted, added wainscoting, and remodeled a cabinet so that the HDTV would fit. I also threaded some Ethernet to the new cabinet. Even though I can get Wi-Fi in my bedroom, I felt a wired connection would be more secure and stable.

Yeah, all that took a month.

So today, my son and I picked up the TV and set things up. That was just about three hours ago. Wednesday I’ll give a more thorough report on how it all works.
