The Year in Review: 2011 Predictions

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Boy, am I seriously not a psychic. That’s okay, because I believe all psychics are not psychic either. So I suppose that makes me a psychic, especially when it came to predicting technology events for the year 2011:

Prediction: iPad 2
Result: Yes!
Comment: Duh. Even though none of my specifics came true. There still is not retina display, USB port, or longer battery life. There is, however, a better case design. I suppose the iPad 3 may have some of those things I predicted and utterly failed to see.

Prediction: Windows 8 Beta.
Result: Nope!
Comment: No Windows 8 beta . . . yet! Supposedly the beta is coming out next year, with Windows 8 due by Christmas 2012, just in time for the apocalypse.

Prediction: Microsoft Dumps Ballmer.
Result: Lamentably, no.
Comment: I think Microsoft has a chance to excel as a tech company. Until they eject Ballmer, it won’t. I’ll stop prediction this event and start praying for it instead.

Prediction: Android Thumps the Market.
Result: Yep!
Comment: Still no sub-notebook Android mobile device yet, but Android is definitely on the rise as far as a mobile OS is concerned. It will eventually be the VHS to Apple’s Betamax (if you’re that old to understand what I’m talking about).

Prediction: Net Neutrality Fiasco Continues.
Result: Sorta
Comment: The new beast is SOPA, or the proposed law to enforce copyright on the Internet. I actually like the law, and believe web sites must be held accountable for hosting or even linking to illegal material. If you lost big money every year from people stealing your stuff, you’d probably feel the same way, too.

Prediction: The Migration to Mobile Computing Devices Continues.
Result: Yep, sorta
Comment: I think laptop sales are definitely eating into PC sales, and that makes lots of sense. I don’t think PCs will ever rev up again and be the dominant part of the computer market. I still don’t see tablets at horning in on laptop sales, nor do I see a migration away from computers to mobile devices, not in any great migration, anyway.

Off-The-Wall Prediction: Korean unification
Result: Nope
Comment: While Kim Jong Shorty-pants met his demise, there won’t be any reunification of Korea any time soon. The area is still interesting, however. I don’t think our planet’s only nightmarish dystopia has long on this earth.
