More Windows 8 Sneaks: The Explorer

Filed under: News — admin @ 7:52 am

The Explorer is the name of the Windows file manager, also called Windows Explorer but not the same thing as Internet Explorer.

O, Microsoft! Can’t you give anything a distinctive name?

Anyway, the Explorer in Windows 8 is going to feature the dratted “Ribbon” interface, long unpopular with converts of the various Microsoft Office applications.

I kind of like the Ribbon, though I’m still a big fan of keyboard accelerators. And, being a nerd, I also like managing files from the Command Prompt window. Anyway. The link below shows you a sneak peek at the new interface everyone will probably be grousing about sometime next year when Windows 8 hits the shelves.

  1. when I first got office 2007 I didn’t like the ribbon but it grew on me, so I think it would be good to have Windows 8 with it, however looking at the pictures there looks to be quite a lot of icons on the ribbon all most too many. One thing that concerns me it how they are going to manage the new user experience and the classic one. It could be very jarring to go from looking at nice shiny tiles, and then suddenly have to go back to normal Windows mode. I just use a desktop at the moment so I will be interested to see how this develops.

  2. Does anyone but a techy, or someone who enjoys computers, actually do file management?

Maybe they should have kept the Cabinet name from the Chicago (Windows 95) pre-releases.

  4. Or the tiled windows of the original Windows shell!

  5. A tiling-only UI would certainly be a curious thing in this day and age.
