Businesses Giving Up on Internet Explorer

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:06 am

Internet Explorer once held 90 percent of the web browser market. Today it’s at 26 percent — and falling. Not only are its two main competitors, Chrome and Firefox, faster, but they’re becoming more acceptable to businesses as well as the mobile market.

If you’ve been to the Wambooli Home page using Internet Explorer, then you see a message displayed:

This web page looks much better when you use a web browser other than Internet Explorer

That message doesn’t show for other browsers, mostly because other browsers properly interpret this web site’s style sheets. Internet Explorer screws things up. Now I could go in and adjust everything for IE, but at 26 percent and dwindling, I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. Apparently big business thinks so as well.

Watch That Mobile Data!

My Droid Bionic, which I loathed and wrote about here, finally died. It just kept turning off and on, starting at about 3:00 AM. Finally, I yanked the battery, and vowed to head to the Verizon store to get a replacement.

The Microsoft Surface Gets 1 Out Of 10

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:42 pm

That score comes from the folks at ifixit.org, who frequently disassemble technology to see how easy it is to fix and access. According to the article (link below), the Microsoft Surface tablet gets the lowest score possible. I’m not surprised.

No, this isn’t another Microsoft slam, despite my enjoyment of doing that. Technology is rapidly returning to its pre-1980s mode where you were forbidden to open a device and work on it. Of course, not everything was verboten; lots of microcomputers had to be opened to expand them. But most manufacturers preferred a closed system. Tablets and phones are closed systems. The Microsoft Surface? Very closed.

Nexus 7 Android 4.2.2 Update

Filed under: News — admin @ 3:35 pm

The Nexus 7 has suffered another Android OS Update! This one appears to be rather mild: Some minor tunes and tweaks, most of the stuff you probably won’t notice. If anything major appears, especially stuff that affects my books, I’ll be sure to write about it on my Nexus 7 support page.

The Meme

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Meme is an old word, though it’s recently been applied to the Internet pop culture. Specifically, a meme today is an Internet theme, a picture, or saying, or something that gets beaten into our everyday digital life.

Going Incognito

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

There you go on the web, visiting site after site. And following you like a wake behind a boat is the digital detritus of the Internet: Cookies, trackers, and other online evidence of your visit. That stuff can come back to haunt you, unless you take advantage of various privacy features found in modern web browsers.

On the Passing of John E. Karlin

Filed under: News — admin @ 5:46 pm

I didn’t know who John Karlin was before I read his obituary (link below). Even though he worked for Ma Bell back in the 1950s and 60s his vision still has an impact on how you use your cell phone today. He’s the push-button man!

Amazon Saves the Post Office!

Filed under: News — admin @ 7:54 am

When I was a tot, mail was delivered twice a day and once on the weekends. Today it’s once a day and soon-to-be only on the weekdays. Come August, Saturday delivery will soon be a thing of the past. But then again, Amazon has big plans for the US Post Office. Perhaps the evil Internet can save one of America’s oldest institutions?

FreeDOS Lives!

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:53 am

Interesting article on FreeDOS, the drop-in MS-DOS and PC-DOS replacement. I’ve used it a bit and have even been tempted to write some documentation for it. Yet it remains very nitchy.
